Warm Current

There's something magical about catching a wave, the exhilaration of riding the ocean's energy, and the pure joy it brings. But for many Native youth on the Washington coast, this experience has often felt out of reach. Enter Warm Current, a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing that narrative by making surfing more accessible and fun for Native youth.

Warm Current hosts community surf camps on the Washington coast in partnership with the Makah Indian Nation, Quileute Nation, Hoh Indian Tribe, and the Quinault Indian Nation. These surf camps are more than just an introduction to the sport; they are a gateway to exploring and reconnecting with ancestral waters. The organization teaches Native youth not only how to surf but also how to embrace the benefits of outdoor recreation in their own backyard.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of these surf camps is witnessing the kids light up when they catch their first wave. The joy and pride they feel is palpable and infectious. But Warm Current understands that not every child will immediately take to the water. For those who may be initially scared, the camps offer a supportive environment where they can play in the ocean, learn to have fun in their surroundings, and build confidence at their own pace.

Safety is a top priority at Warm Current. Before hitting the waves, a group huddle is formed where instructors go over safety protocols, ensuring that every participant understands how to stay safe while enjoying their time in the water. By using hand gestures and signals, participants understand what needs to be done if things go awry. This is then followed by stretching exercises to ensure everyone is limber and ready for the physical activity ahead.

The beauty of Warm Current’s mission lies not just in the act of surfing but in the broader lessons it imparts. It’s a reminder that life’s simplest pleasures often come from our connection to the environment and the community around us. It’s about enjoying the ocean, appreciating nature, and fostering friendships. Through these experiences, Native youth learn that it's not always about the wave but about the camaraderie, the environment, and simply having a good time with friends.

Warm Current embodies the spirit of community, support, and encouragement. The organization provides a space where Native youth can feel empowered, supported, and connected. It’s about more than surfing; it's about giving back, helping where we can, and building a stronger, more inclusive community.

In a world that often feels overwhelmingly complex, Warm Current serves as a beautiful reminder of life’s simple joys. It shows us that sometimes, the greatest happiness comes from engaging with nature, fostering community bonds, and enjoying the moment.
